Generating Connection with Mongoose Power Solutions: The Conference

Mongoose Power Solutions is “generating” some great events!

Last week, the MSI Data team attended the 4th Annual Northeastern Emergency Power Conference hosted by Mongoose Power Solutions in Springfield, Massachusetts. The aftermath of another great conference left us feeling inspired and eager to put new industry information to use, and to share some highlights from our favorite sessions.

Background: Mongoose Power Solutions, founded by Michelle Hilger in 2019, focuses on the power generation industry, providing training for technicians and advocating for industry standards. They host an annual conference featuring speakers who are experts in various fields related to power generation, business development, and innovation. The conference aims to prepare businesses for future challenges through workshops and networking opportunities with industry leaders.

While this was not our first foray into the Power Generation space, there are always more advancements to learn about and discuss. Kevin Paolino, MSI Data Account Executive, made sure to take lots of notes to share:

  1. Industry Insights: There’s no better place to learn about an industry than immersion among experts. Mongoose assembled a wonderful array of experts in power generation, business development, and innovation. We enjoyed hearing about changes in the PowerGen industry including:
    • limited resources (e.g. being short staffed, limited talent coming into the industry
    • reduced budget for efficiency tools
    • loss of veteran tribal knowledge as they retire/exit the industry
    • price increase on parts due to private equity consolidation/acquisition)
    • white glove customer service with consultative direction
    • ways to reduce employee turnover
    • ways to help obtain and grow new talent
  1. Networking Opportunities: With such a wonderful array of people, we spent time talking with Generator focused companies such as Adirondack Generators, Curtis Power Solutions, and UG2 Facilities Services. From new industry standards and ways to leverage field service technology to “smart equipment” with IoT driven company Power Telematics Inc (Duluth, GA), our curiosity was sparked.
  1. Technical Training: Through specialized workshops aimed at technicians and professionals, we learned about how to implement changes on the sales side, from: ways to build motivation, better communicate with teams and leadership, overcoming obstacles in the field, boost sales (without increasing costs) with consultative direction, how companies are investing in people and technology, how to have better conversations & improve active listening, how to “find your why” and continue to irritate to improve our abilities, and leading with empathy & strength.

Pete Scalish, MSI Data Account Executive found the breakout sessions on Tuesday afternoon with Ben Killoy to be very impactful. With the overall message of “what percent of the problem is you”, these sessions were geared more towards leadership reflecting internally to gain perspective.

Another session was designed to reflect on “when your business gets hit by a storm” (metaphorical storm or real storm for Power Generation). Killoy led the group through how to not let history repeat itself and to take the positives away from times of struggle, proactively address shortcomings, and realize that you and your business wouldn’t be where you are today without these challenges.

“I found them to be insightful small group activities that allowed everyone to be vulnerable and share their challenges with the group to get feedback. The “what percentage of the problem is you” also helped me reflect on what I can do better as a teammate, father, husband, friend, individual contributor, brother, and son. It was very applicable to all areas of life and while not industry focused, it definitely got a lot of people thinking…”

SUMMARY

This conference had a lot to offer, with a great mix of everything and space to discuss and absorb it all. From insightful sessions about the changing Power Generation industry and world, to technical training and lively networking opportunities, the Northeastern Emergency Power Conference will maintain a place on our 2025 event shortlist.

We look forward to using our new knowledge as we strive to bring greater visibility and profitability to Power Generation companies across the globe with Service Pro.
